When I am in charge of FHE

David did come back from Houston on Friday night, and I'm sure today
at work was a very busy clean up day. To add to the craziness, some
people from Houston are coming in this week- so today is the day to
prepare for that too. Dave said he might be late tonight, as well as
most of the nights this week.

Last week I gave a solo lesson for FHE but it only lasted about 5
minutes. (we talked about GENSHAI) We then listened to the BOM CDs
while we drove to get shakes.

This week I wasn't sure what to do for FHE.

Well, as I was thinking another what to talk about for fhe I sat down
with my guitar to practice for my lessons. We have some Christmas
songs so I called my boys in and told them we were going to sing
Christmas songs. Then the light bulb went in- Joseph went and got a
few of his drums and Jacob started playing the acoustic guitar, while
I had the steel string guitar and we started rocking out. We played
all the songs we both knew from my music, but our hits of the night
are feliz navedad- up on the housetop and jingle bells. The drums were
pretty loud and I figured we should quiet down by 8:00 so sadly we put
the things away and Dave missed the performance. I don't think our
neighbors were as lucky.
It was a very crazy family home evening.

while Dave was gone

Dave had to be in Texas last week, and Louis had to be in Isreal, so the sisters spent much time together. We went to Ikea, Tai Pan, and Pirate Island eating place. Here's a few pictures of our adventures. While Krista and I were trying to get something done on the computer, there was a funny noise coming from a the computer. Krista clicked somewhere and all of the sudden her computer was connected to Louis- there he was in his hotel, ready to sleep in Isreal. All three of his girls that were there were thrilled. It was really cute to see.

I also got to spend a little time with Jack Clarke- what a fun kid. I know he will get more entertaining as he gets older. It was great to spend time with him

An old obsession

I am back at indexing. I'd taken a break but for the last couple weeks
I've been at it like a mad woman. I get sucked into the project by all the names and ages and where the people have come from. It's odd that it is so addictive, but really, it is. I have a goal to reach by the end of the year. I dont even know if it is realistic, but I want to score 20,000 more names to my score. Then my total for all time will be 100,000. Ill get there eventually I suppose

I am a Pioneer Woman fan- and now an Aspire fan too

Laura and I went to see

But we ended up in line talking and visiting with

While we were waiting in the line all night we became friends with lots of people around us. This guy, Kevin Hall, is a local author . He and the PW are published by the same company. He came to see and experience her huge success. He kept saying how incredible it was for her to be so popular so fast. Kevin told me his book is about the power of words. I really wasn't sure what that meant, but mentally kicked myself every time I let "awesome" or "wow" or "cool" slip from my mouth. His book, from what I can tell, is more about using words to help yourself, from the inside. I think it will be interesting to read.
I've learned, the hard way, that I need to be careful of my thoughts, meaning having positive thoughts, building thoughts. (It brings new meaning to having wearing the armour of god, and using a helmet of salvation for your thoughts)

He gave me a free copy and in exchange I offered him my Pioneer Woman cookbook. I had got mine through Amazon pre order. The books at the book signing were all sold. During our long wait, he talked to me about the meaning of some words, like for'give'ness (giving someone something- totally) and also passion (something you love, and are willing to suffer for). He also used phrases I really liked. Talking about how he met his wife, he said he 'over-married' - he married someone better than himself. Also, "don't do what your good at, do what you are great at". While he went to his car, I was telling the gals around me about his book. One lady asked how one would find out what they were "great" at. When he came back, I kinda acted the silly that I am, and told him I had taken questions from the audience and had him tell the group around us his answers. Ya wanna know what the answer to this question is? He said, you are "great" at the things you have done all your life that others say- you're a natural at that, things you probably already know about yourself. It was very interesting

He has kindly offered a free copy of "Aspire" to any of my friends and family, if I understood his email correctly. So if you'd like to have one let me know. The books won't be available to the general public until Jan 2010.

Here's part of a press release on his book-
INSPIRATIONAL SPEAKER KEVIN HALL UNLOCKS THE SECRET MEANING OF WORDS IN GROUNDBREAKING NEW BOOK Hall’s ‘Aspire’ takes readers through a unique journey of self-discovery and purpose (New York, NY, November 5, 2009) – Highly sought-after leadership speaker and business coach Kevin Hall releases his widely appealing and highly anticipated inaugural book, “Aspire: Discovering Your Purpose Through the Power of Words,” which guides readers on a journey through inspirational encounters that individually reveal the inherent power of words. Hall had successfully printed and sold a limited edition of "Aspire" when he entered into a unique co-publishing agreement with William Morrow, an imprint of Harper Collins Publishers. While the book will become widely available in stores on January 5, 2010, thousands of passionate followers have already driven “Aspire” to on-line bestseller lists. Hall breaks down this secret vocabulary into 11 key words, which he creatively serves to his readers through a series of enlightening and sometimes heart-wrenching stories. Beginning with an encounter with a shopkeeper in Vienna, Hall discovers that one word, “Genshai,” could change the world for the better; and from here, the journey begins. Chad Hymas, a quadriplegic on a race to set a world record, introduces Hall to the deeper meaning of “Passion,” and Michael Jordan’s famed mind coach, Dr. Gerald Bell, unlocks the power of “Pathfinder.” Part inspirational text and part self-discovery workbook, “Aspire” challenges readers to discover their own true purpose by actively participating in the journey, essentially creating a register of individuals who have enriched their lives by embodying the outlined words in “The Book of Greats.” “Words have tremendous power for good or for ill. They can inspire or expire. The choice is ours,” declares Hall. “Using words and language that lift the human spirit creates a new paradigm in thinking. Instead of “What can I get?” our mentality shifts to “What can I give?” “Aspire” and Hall have already received immense acclaim from renowned leaders in the industry, including Dr. Stephen R. Covey, bestselling author of “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People,” who provides the foreword in this book. “Just as I broke new ground in human development over twenty years ago by uncovering the habits that make for a meaningful and effective life,” states Covey, “Kevin is breaking new ground by uncovering and revealing the true intent and meaning of the words that make up those habits.” ### About Kevin Hall Kevin Hall is a highly sought-after business consultant, speaker and coach. He was a partner in Franklin Quest, the precursor to Franklin Covey, makers of the Franklin Day Planner. As vice president of Sales and Training, he helped fuel Franklin's worldwide growth. Kevin is cofounder of the Statue of Responsibility Foundation envisioned by Dr. Viktor Frankl, author of “Man's Search for Meaning.” He has been recognized for his groundbreaking approach to uncovering the hidden, and often secret, meanings of words. Kevin is also credited with wordsmithing and trademarking the original slogan for the 2002 Olympic Winter Games, "Ignite the Fire Within." A midsummers nights dream

Here's my kid dresses as Oberon, king of the fairies in Shakespeares
play. Not sure how I feel about the wreath or the dramatic stage
makeup but so goes being on stage. You'll notice there is no splint on
his arm. He's actually doing okay in the healing of his broken
radius. He is holding a package of playing cards. He uses them for
magic tricks but I gave no idea why they are part of his get up right
now.. The show opens Thursday! It's going to be a good weekend.

A new naughty trick

I recently saw this naughty recipe demonstrated at a little cooking
class I attended. Make a package of brownies, spread half in the pan-
layer on 3 symphony bars. Top with the other half of the brownie mix
and bake as directed. Cool then slice. If you eat this with while it
is still warm, you will forget all your problems for a little while.

Layer the three right next to each other

Covering the candy bars

I had to get this

It has been so cold recently, I woke up Thursday with a plan. I had
to have a warmer bed. Once we are both tucked in we can stay warm but
that first crawl inbetween the sheets is a true chiller. So I bit the
bullet and bought this little number on payday Friday. I didn't tell
Dave about it till he got in the prewarmed bed. He was happy with my
big move to buy this. It will especially come in handy when he is
traveling for work. Trinidad and Houston before the year is over. I'm
really trying not to be a whiner about it.

The two in the middle

Here are the cake decorators. Just had to include this picture

Cupcakes by 16 year old guys

This past week was the halloween party a the church. Josephs group was
asked to provide cupcakes. I baked them for him while he was at
school. When he got home, he and a buddy agreed to frost them. They
used 1/2 of a canister of store bought frosting for the whole batch of
cupcakes. Here's how they looked. I dint know... Hummmm what was
missing? I'd just guess it was a tiny bit of a womans touch. I
doctored them up and sent a dozen beauties off to the cake walk. Those
boys made me laugh.

it's got to be done

As much as I generally dislike Halloween, there are a few things about it, I so love & I just have to do. One year we refinished our wood floors over Halloween and stayed at my sisters house for a week. It was so great to have Halloween with the little nieces and nephews, And my own kids loved trick or treating ith cousins, but I missed seeing my own neighborhood kids, and even carving a pumpkin. It threw me not to do those yearly things. It's like when there is a holiday on a Monday and it throws the whole week. The rest of the week you never really know what day it is. So this year, I just did stuff my self since no one else is really interested. I bought enough candy for the too tall to tricker treat ers as well as for the neighborhood kids. Ill love the cool night air, and the smell of the candle burning the top of the Jack-o-lantern. I'll love seeing the little kids and some of the parents come to the door. It's great just to see everyone. I will miss my own kids coming in and out- grabbing the traditional Halloween pizza in between trick or treating adventures.

A very serious post

Well, anyone that knows me, knows that I am a big fan of Hot Chocolate. It is one of the ways I cope with the cold weather. I fell for the deal at Costco, 4 cans for $10
So heres what it came down to, The most deluxe and best hot cocoa, is definitely the dark chocolate one. Second is the pumpkins spice. When in a blind taste test, by Kim, she couldn't really identify the pumpkin part of the flavor, but I still find it tasty. The milk chocolate comes in third, and the others... well ummmmm, I hope someone else will drink them.

So now you are adequately educated as to my opinions on these Stephens flavors. If you want the french vanilla or the peanut butter one, give me a text, and you can at least try them.

Now you know why this was a serious post

Just what I thought

This morning Jacob reported waking up during the night with some a
pain. I figured that was pretty suspicious of a break- we got into our
doctor, dr Weipert, at 11:10. He assessed the whole situation,
thinking it might just be a bruised bone, but sent us for an xray
anyway. I went into the xray with Jacob and could see a little
abnormality about where he reported having pain. I was really
surprised to see a break but the technician poo poo ed my guess.
After a cafe rio lunch we got a call reporting he did have a true
fracture. Hummmmm what now xray lady? We went back to the dr and got
a soft splint. Dr Weipert was awesome about the midsummers nights
dream coming up. Jacob has a big part, Oberon in that play. It opens
in 1 1/2 weeks. The dr also prescribed calcium rich foods as well, so
we stopped off at A&W and got him a rootbeer float. So that was my
Monday.

We'll wrap it up with v t ing and home evening. For fhe we are
watching a Dave Ramsey DVD. Do you know Dave Ramsey? He is awesome!
He's a cross between an financial planner and a preacher man. So now
you're up to date with the fall/xray/soft splint/ Jr high play goings
on :)

Another broken bone?

Jacob got into a little foot tangle with cosmo the dog tonight. He has
a scrape on his forehead, and lower arm. He has also been favoring his
lower right arm. The after hours clinic is closed for the night so
we're going to have to wait for morning to see what the damage is. We
wrapped it and iced it and gave him 1600mg ibuprofen. On the way home
from Provo Jacob started perking up. I'll report more later.

Macaroni grill bread

I have a friend named Edee. She really doesn't live far from me but I
usually keep up with her via her blog- or at weddig receptions we seem
to visit for awhile. It really is odd. Non the less, she teaches me
things through her blog. Recently she had about The Macaroni Grill.
Yum! David and I love that place, mostly for the chocolate cake. Ah
man who am I kidding? It's mostly for the chocolate ganache on the
chocolate cake, with a tiny bit of icecream. (Last time I had my
annual "x-ray" I comforted myself with that ganache.) David and I
usually split a Tuscan ribeye steak and the ganache, I mean the cake.

Anyway Edee shared a link to a recipe for the bread they serve there.
I whipped out a batch tonight to go with the potato soup I made.
Totally cheater potato soup, but my boys like it.
When the king of the castle comes home, he will love that bread. I
even have some balsamic vinegar and olive oil or dipping

And so it begins

Today we leave for a little get away. We are headed to Disneyland-
sadly Kim can't come with us though. Steve Laura and Jack will meet
us there so we are traveling with just three of our kids. Kind of
weird and quiet. It will be great to spend the time with the big
family that is also going to be there. More pictures to come.

Activity Day

I was in charge of activity day today. My co leader and I meet with the 8 and 9 yr olds and it is a lot of fun. Today we talked about friendship. We had to meet outside, since our key didn't work for the church building, but it was OK- a little cold, but OK. I asked the girls to close their eyes. I asked them to raise their hand if they had a very best friend that they could depend on. It was very sad that not all the girls rose their hand. I asked if they wanted a friend that was a best friend. They all did raise their hand on that one. I asked them to think about the things a best friend does and think if they need to be more like a best Friend to people in their lives. Then I read the girls this story. It is a very good book, with a cute message on the importance of having friends. Then we wrote compliments to each other on little 3X5 cards. I planned on making friendship bracelets, but we ran out of time, and sunshine, so we'll do that net time. I was worried we wouldn't have enough to do and was really stressed out about it, but it worked out really well.

Wednesdays at El Azteca

For awhile my sibs that lived near by were meeting each week with our brother Steve for lunch. He works out of town, but once a week he has a break for lunch right in Provo. We stopped doing it, but recently started up again. Because it always starts a family fight to decide where we'll have lunch we have a standing place we go. El Azteca, It is right by Provo High so Brig gets to join us which is very fun. Wish all the nieces and nephews could come... Steve and Ray have a funny relationship, which really, does this surprise anyone?

I love these lunch dates, Mom and Dad usually show up and Louis too. The carne asada taco is great, but if you get the platter, there is plenty to share.. and the babies like me more ;)

Why does this seem familiar?

Tomorrow is my oldest childs birthday. As always, I'm a little
sentimental. 25 years ago tonight we were thinking maybe our baby would come soon. I had been to the dr that day and he told me I'd prob go into labor within 24 hours. We got through the night pretty well and decided to go to the hospital that morning. By 3:30 our little girl was here. It was such an amazing experience, and I finally became a mommy-- A MOMMY!! The only thing I wanted more than being a wife was to be a mommy. Its been a great 25 years with my Laur. I'm so happy with the woman she has become- smart, beautiful and so fun. She is truely a great friend to me. We've had so much fun together. I'm glad she is my daughter forever.

today I was with someone that made me wonder

I wonder if I am a whiner. I was with someone today that really made me think about that. I have made decisions in my life to put me where I am. Nothing tragical has happened to me. I've planned my life, followed the plan, and I hope I'm not a whiner about the results, that I chose.

Being with a whiner is such a downer. I don't want to be like that. I know there is a therapeutic place for downloading to a friend, but when it is all that is ever discussed, it is just wrong. (I want to ask these people, why did you become a teacher if you hate it? why did you have kids if you don't like to be with them? Why did you even get married if you hate it?)

It's true, I do my share of whining. Jim and Krista and Michelle get the most of my downloads, and of course Dave too. Now that I think of it, so many people make me think I am a whiner. bummer, but in my own defense I can laugh and joke and have a great time with all these folks. Being a downer is not the only part of my interaction with these friends.

On the flip side, there are people that have had very sad disruptions in their lives, yet they are positive and kind and uplifting. These people are like a breath of fresh air.

This is what I aspire to be, to look for the good and not complain about the choices I have made. I acknowledge not all my decisions are smart or the best, but I will move on and not let that bring me down. People can be so powerful, and they get to choose to which power they are working for.

I'm going to go for it- wish me luck :)

Saturday We spent the day in Springville. We went up with Josephs day date to the Pope cabin. Pope policy says a real Pope must be with any group up there, so we went to help entertain Krista and her people while Joseph played. Heres a few of the pictures

Thursday, September 24, 2009

As luck would have it

Both David and Louis are gone from their wifes today. David has been
in Houston all week and louis just left today. To help my week along
I've spent some time with Krista each day. If her kids aren't
entertaining enough, they now have kittens at their house. It really
is a good way to distract me. We canned pears on two days and we met
for lunch today.
All I have to say is good thing Louis and David didn't marry
shoppers... Just dutiful Mormon girls that stay home and "put up" fruit

We made salsa

Today I met up with my Mom and sister Krista to make salsa. We got some fine tomatoes for 7 bucks a box. We had two boxes. Actually my Dad found them for us. We ended up with 23 pints of yummy salsa. Krista made up some "chips and cheese and salsa" for her girls and we all had some and the salsa was awesome. Some of my strongest memories of fall time are of coming home from school and having salsa or chili sauce cooking or being canned. I don't know that any other Mom I knew did that, but it is a strong connection with my Mom. She was a big tease today while we did the salsa.. what a woman.

Joseph the chef

Joseph offered to make dinner tonight. He made up the recipe. I don't
know it all, but I did purchase steak, bacon, provalone cheese and
buns. He cooked all the meat on the grill. (in the rain) He made us
some yummy sandwiches. He has been known to say he wants to be a chef
when he is older, maybe own an establishment as well.

*Must come from his first weeks of life when he almost starved to death*

Awesome I say, I'm happy to let him work on it in my kitchen. Or my
grill

Remember this bad boy?

Well I just finished the tree appliqué. It was a daunting task, anda
little awkward, but I got her done. Next, all the leaves go on. On
the leaves are written names from our family tree.. Walden Pennock
Powell Hostick Langman
Cluff McConahay Davis Williams ... I could go on and on. I guess I
will go on and on stitching on the leaves. It will take a long time,
but I trust it will be much easier. I'll let ya know ;)

We're going to the home games this year

and for the record, we are not going for the football game

he's been taking lessons

Joseph is in the purcussion class at the high school. As a result, he is also in the pep band. We caught him on video this last weekend. HE IS AWESOME!! watch for the oh- man-my-mom-is-taping-me look he throws me. I know its not where he wants to be, hed rather be with his friends, but he does a great job.

I've been so scared

I signed up for another block of the month club last January. I do
love stitching while watching, or listening to, t.v. at night. This
block with the tree was our February block and I've been putting it
off till now. Ahh look at all those gangely branches. Can I do this
one? I'm giving it a shot. I'll let you know how it turns out.

He did it!

Joseph had his last board of review tonight as a scout. My own history with boy scouts has not been that great and it was soley Joseph and
David that pushed this goal through. He went alone tonight and said it went ok. He has warmed up to attending a ward court of honor, so there may be more ceremony to come. For along time he didn't want any fanfare or recognition. So here he is!! Joseph is AWESOME- and not just cause he attained the rank of Eagle scout

She did it!

Kim met one of her long time goals yesterday! I was driving back home with my two teenage sons when Jacob read a text that had come to my phone. (I love having extra eyes and ears in the car so I can still text, using them, while I drive) he read "I made theater ballet". I had to pull over because I got so emotional over it. I knew she had the audition, and had wondered and worried for her. Most of you know the tough road she's been on with her feet, plus her taking a year off ballet classes. Her attaining this goal is HUGE!! Theater ballet is BYUs best performing ballet company. There will be a few perks for her in being involved and she had her first practice this morning. Her first show is the second week in September. I think it is maybe homecoming spectacular, held in the Marriot Center. Kinda cool!!! I am so happy for her, because I know this makes her happy. We went out for subzero ice cream to celebrate. Only Jacob and I were able to meet her but all three of us totally celebrated!!Congratulations Kimmie girl!!

What I've been sewing

Awhile ago I offered to make Aubrey a new bag for her books this year. Her old bag kinda fell apart. It was a simple canvas bag. She said I could make her one if I wanted and I really did want to. The pattern I bought was from an independant gal- not from a pattern company. Trying to making those little independant jobs is always risky. Sometimes the instructions are hard to understand. (like the Amy Butler everything bag) I made a bag for me so I could try out the pattern before starting AJs bag. Here are the two finished bags. They each have two zippered packets -one on the inside one on the outside- and a sectioned pocket inside, plus a magnet closer. Kinda fun. you can try to guess which is mine and which is Aubreys

Got him

Today I got to meet Laura for a quick exchange of things I had for her and a chance for me to cuddle Jack. Good thing I lipsticked up on the way there. Hahahahahahahahahaa in exchange for indulging his grandma he will be rewarded as the days come. I will get him all sorts of fun stuff his own mom will have no patience for. Maybe it's time to go shoppin...

The patents

My dh is great at many things. One of his little known skills is writing patents. Over the years he has had to go to the awards meeting
in Texas. He brings home a plaque for the recent patents he has helped write and push through. He has all 18 or so in a storage container in our bedroom. I tell him to hang them in our hall, or in the manly garage. No no- I think they will stay in the storage box so I can put my laundry basket on it. I'm so amazed I ended up with such a smart man.

again, I turn to the ice

after a few weeks of some stress, disappointment and sadness I kinda crashed recently. Heartache in the lives of those around me and a run in with "bells palsy" and some powerful contention in my life finally caught up with me. I think the thing that really pushed it over the edge was a meeting we went to. We had done alot of arranging to make it to the meeting, only to have it be mostly a waste of time and a headache/stomach-ache inducer. So I woke up with the same headache. My remedy? good ice of course- and good happy music played loudly, and taking cookies to Dave at work. As I was headed south on I-15 listening to "sugar sugar you are my candy girl I you got me wanting you" I wondered what other happy songs are out there. I thought about asking my sibs and whole big family about their happy songs. I figured I could make a playlist of everyones songs to help me out when I am activly 'fighting the good fight'. So what do you got? so far I have
If I had a million dollars
accidentally in love
here comes the sun
earl had to die
just to see you smile, though that one really brought out my tears today
girls just wanna have fun
my girl
a few more- I think I like ones with awesome drums
so help me out. What do you think? What songs make you happy?

new songs

I started a new playlist for my blog. I started doing show tune songs. Dave and I had gone to the Hale Center Theater and we saw Singing In the Rain. It was awesome. They had a sprinkler system up in the ceiling for the "singing in the rain" song. THAT was amazing. They gave out ponchos to the first row of the audience for the water factor. They young man playing the Gene Kelly "Don" was fabulous. After the water had fallen for a bit while he sang, he started messing with the audience kicking water and splashing all over. It was very cool. Dave and I were on the top row so we missed that part of the show. The person who played Don was actually Brother Johnson's son in law- I never have met him but I knew who he was. After the show, I saw Bro Johnson's daughter Jylare. I introduced myself to her and she was very very sweet giving me a hug. She told me her uncle was at the show that night. I was thinking could it be the one uncle I know? and yep it was. Craig Johnson was there and I got to say hi and introduce him to Dave. Craig Johnson was just enough older than me back in the day that I wasn't really in his crowd, but we were friends. It was really cool to see him again. He definitely still had his signature smile.

so back to the play list, I started with singing in the rain, and did a few others, but eventually I started with the Disney cartoon songs. I got a little melancholy as I remembered my littles watching those shows day in and day out.
I particularly remembered one day when I had 3 little girls and I had to take Laura and Aubrey somewhere. Kimmie wanted to stay home. Looking back I can say she was really too young, about 7 to be left alone, but we were in a duplex at the time and the upstairs neighbor was there.... what ever.. anyway we came home and Kimmie told me to sit down and watch her. She had choreographed several songs from Aladdin. I vividly remember her dancing to Arabian nights in her jasmine jammies, very authentic. It was a sign of things to come in her dancing life.. So there ya go, hope you find the songs fun

Last Saturday

Last Saturday my dear husband faithfully attended his great great great (etc) grandfathers family reunion. He asked me a few times to come with him, and though it was not on my top ten things to do on a Saturday, I went with him. There were only about 25 people there, 6 or 7 being primary aged children. It was awkward and conversation was slow, but we got through it. At the end we went on a tour of a early 1900s home. I did enjoy that part, saying that makes me sound old. On the way home Dave asked if he owed me a big favor and I answered, I think I'll go get a pedicure on Monday. He agreed that that would be a great idea. So I cashed in on that perk thanking Robert Pixton the whole time.
Here's a few photos from the house. Its in Taylorsville in case you were wondering. And Taylorsville is named for John Taylor fyi
